News from Eerdmans . . . 

• We welcome to Eerdmans this week Jessica VanBuren, who will be working with independent trade stores including religious trade, general trade, children’s bookstores, and museum gift shops as our new inside sales representative.  Jessica is a recent graduate of Grand Valley State University, where she earned a B.A. in Advertising and Public Relations and gained experience in marketing and market research. • With profound sadness, Eerdmans Books for Young Readers notes the untimely death of illustrator Patricia Cantor. Pat had recently finished her charming illustrations for Christopher Sat Straight Up in Bed, scheduled for publication on our Spring 2013 list. We had been looking forward to working with her on future projects when we learned the sad news that she was terminally ill. She died on July 17. We greatly regret that Pat did not live to see her last book in its finished form, but we take comfort in the knowledge that this book will exist as a permanent monument to her extraordinary gifts as an illustrator.

• Mark Noll’s Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind was selected as winner of the first ever Book Award for Excellence in Nonfiction, awarded by the Association of Christian Librarians, which announced, “by selecting this book we will send a clear message that we, as Christian academic librarians, not only appreciate the author’s efforts to encourage us to become better intellectual disciples of our Lord and Savior, but also that we aspire to lead the academic community on this exciting journey.”
• The Vancouver Sun featured R. Paul Stevens’s Work Matters: Lessons from Scripture in its article “Christian author sees ‘mark of Cain’ in global marketplace.”
• Englewood Review of Books published a featured review of Prophetic Evangelicals: Envisioning a Just and Peaceable Kingdom (edited by Bruce Ellis Benson, Malinda Elizabeth Berry, and Peter Goodwin Heltzel).
• Matthew Miller reviewed Colin Kruse’s new PNTC volume on Romans for the ChristianBook.com Academics blog, dubbing it “A Workman’s Commentary.”
• Steve Bishop of An Accidental Blog created a colorful (and very clever) mindmap of Richard Mouw’s Abraham Kuyper: A Short and Personal Introduction.
• The Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast book blog (more commonly known as 7-Imp among kidlit aficionados) posted “Seven Questions Over Breakfast with Marisabina Russo,” featuring art from her picture book Peter Is Just a Baby.
• James McGrath of Exploring Our Matrix reviewed Gregory Mobley’s The Return of the Chaos Monsters, calling it “not merely clear but engaging, striking, evocative, provocative, and a thoroughly enjoyable read.”
• Catholic San Francisco (the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of San Francisco) included W. Paul Jones’s A Different Kind of Cell: The Story of a Murderer Who Became a Monk in its feature story “Hope and despair: 3 books put human face on prison inmates.”
• Robyn Hood Black shared a heartwarming interview with Lee Bennett Hopkins, in which he discussed the creation of his new picture book Mary’s Song.
• Nate Claiborne reviewed John L. Thompson’s Reading the Bible with the Dead on Marturo.
• Victoria Gaile Laidler at Gaudete Theology expressed her excitement at the pending release of Walter Ray’s Tasting Heaven on Earth: Worship in Sixth-Century Constantinople, calling the Church at Worship series it belongs to “a terrific series for liturgy geeks!“
• Peter Enns continued his discussion of Kenton Sparks’s Sacred Word, Broken Word on Rethinking Biblical Christianity with a post entitled “Scripture is not Perfect.”
• Michelle Markel (author of The Fantastic Jungles of Henri Rousseau) unveiled her new website.
• RealClearReligion included Peggy Fletcher Stack’s Christianity Today interview with Richard Mouw (Talking with Mormons) in its Tuesday Morning Update. The interview was also featured in the Christianity Today Direct newsletter.
• Publishers Weekly shared news of Eerdmans’s 10 2012 Catholic Press Book Awards in its “Short Takes: Religion Publishing News Briefs, July 2012,” featured five forthcoming EBYR titles in its children’s “Spring 2013 Sneak Previews,” and mentioned Nicholas Wolterstorff’s Lament for a Son in its story “Good Grief: New Books on the Ways We Grieve.”

• We unfortunately neglected to include Jim West’s review of The Spirit and Christ in the New Testament and Christian Theology in our original post. We happily share it with you now.
• We should also note that we mixed up Gareth Cockerill’s NICNT volume on Hebrews and Colin Kruse’s PNTC volume on Romans in our original mention of Matthew Miller’s review. The post has now been updated to correct our mistake.
