Happy Birthday, Eerdmans!
One hundred years ago today, William B. Eerdmans and Brant Sevensma signed articles of association incorporating the Eerdmans-Sevensma Company.
The company’s stated purpose that day was “to buy and sell, at wholesale and at retail, domestic and imported books, pamphlets, charts, pictures and all kinds of printed and illustrated matter, stationary and library supplies and the acquirement of manuscripts for publication and sale.”
Eerdmans doesn’t sell much stationary anymore, but it has proudly kept on acquiring, publishing, and selling books — “the finest in religious literature,” as Wm. B. Eerdmans Sr. would say — for exactly one century now (give or take a few hours).
An Eerdmans Century
In honor of this joyous occasion, William B. Eerdmans Jr. offers a brief word of greeting and of thanks.
Greetings.
Jesus calls us from the hellish tedium of me, me, me,
To the adoration of the te Deum —
Calls us cantus firmus that we may be one, dying and rising in Him.
Carpe diem!
Our century’s ‘bout solid gone;
Thank all of you, come and gone alike, for going along with us this long way.

Felicitations and congratulations on your milestone annivesary. Proud to say that perhaps my humble services have in some small way advanced the name of the Lord through the printed word. Of making many books there will be no end etc. etc. etc. The gone are present in spirit wasping through those hallowed halls holding the aprons of those sacred offices housing the minds of many and the souls of all.
And Jesus replied, “I have come that you may have life and have life abundantly.” Amen.
